About
Short Bio
Jachya Freeth (b. 1974) grew up in the streets of Amsterdam. In a time when Techno music entered the club scene, artificial drugs hit the streets and spraying the subways was a sport for many, Freeth quickly rose to the ranks of an influential graffiti writer. Always being an innovator and trendsetter, widely recognized in Europe, his passion for letters and colors evolved into a strong dedication for painting canvases.
He took up studies at the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam where he painted primarily in oil, a technique that takes a lot of patience and time much in contrast to his prior paintings which usually were executed in a short time. Often it takes weeks or months to complete one canvas.
This brings in a whole different conceptual background to these paintings. They often reflect the complex character of Freeth, a bright but also deep person. He utilizes images from a seemingly endless stream of pop culture icons, memories of the grimy streets, familiar pictures as well as inspiration from his surroundings and imagination.
